Paper Boats EP – street date 6/11/21

Nashville-based singer-songwriter James DiGirolamo has extensive experience as a session musician and touring sideman. As a keyboard player, he’s worked with Mindy Smith, Holly Williams, Peter Bradley Adams, Alice Peacock, and many others. DiGirolamo’s latest solo work draws on a wide array of influences including Paul Simon, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Elliott Smith, Kate Bush, Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, Harry Nilsson, Thomas Dolby, XTC, Ben Folds, Ron Sexsmith, and to no small degree many friends and peers from his time in Nashville, such as Sarah Siskind. In his words, “These are not always overt, or even apparent, but they’re in there- that’s part of the beauty of the DNA of songwriting.”

The title Paper Boats is a playful combination of the names of the first and last tracks. As DiGirolamo puts it, “in my mind, each of the songs is a tiny boat I constructed, which I now hope to launch across a glassy pond, or -more like it- a turbulent sea.”

The opening track, “Same Boat,” comes from a Stevie Wonder/ Paul McCartney-esque place. From the song – “I can’t pretend that I have all the answers/ by magic turn these fighters into dancers.” JD explains, “Sometimes a phrase just sticks in mind, or goes perfectly with what you’re playing on the piano, and so you see where it leads. In this case, words tumbled out to form a catchy tune about people coming together to face big challenges. It’s not meant to be an exhaustive statement on the subject, it’s just one sweeping aspect of the conversation. We have to imagine that world before we can make it real. The musical style is a bit of a stew, too, just like all of us diverse humans who need one another.”

The hypnotic track “On Paper” finds the song’s protagonist reflecting on divorce with some startling imagery: “Black is the color of ink a squid jets out when he takes a fright/ silly me, I never stop to think, I might just have to gear up for a fight.”  In his songwriting, DiGirolamo clearly seeks to avoid predictable lyrics and chords, but skillfully walks the high wire with creative choices. The results are fresh and complex, resonant rather than  opaque.

The rest of the EP is made up of love songs, though decidedly not the run of the mill. “The Girl Who has Everything” explores a few fanciful notions about what you might offer such a person, besides one’s undying love and devotion, that is. The song was co-written with Daniel Tashian, “seemingly a lifetime ago,” notes DiGirolamo. We were in no small way emulating Burt Bacharach at the time, and I have not shied away from this in my horn arrangement. It is marvelous that Daniel has gone on to actually record an album with Burt!  I’m very happy to finally give this song wings, after a few pre-Wright Brothers-style attempts.”

DiGirolamo confides, “I didn’t originally set out to become a songwriter or performer. I was sure I would write film scores. I was in love with work by Bernard Hermann and Ennio Morricone. But, I was a dreamy kid, I didn’t have any idea what was actually involved. My odyssey as a creative person has been full of rude awakenings and jarring disappointments, as well as some truly unforgettable peaks. I’ve come through with that inner dreamy kid intact and active, ultimately. It’s a quality which helps me to see the world from a unique angle, which keeps my writing fresh. I never get bored. That’s one of the biggest things that makes me grateful and glad to be alive.”

Hailing from Corpus Christi, Texas, J-Minu$ is a true hustler in every sense of the word. With an early attachment to music at a young age, J began recording and writing music at the age of 16. J-Minu$ brings a unique sound to the industry with a cinematic approach at contempoary bedroom pop & hyper pop with musical influence from the punk wave of the ’80s along with modern superstars such as Juice World, All American Rejects, Michael Jackson, Post Malone, & Big Sean. Priding himself in his hard work and dedication towards his craft, J has been recording music out of his family’s food truck while juggling a full-time job and various side hustles since 2016. Early in his career J-Minu$ has released over 70 tracks independently with a song going viral to earn him a verification badge on Instagram before completely rebranding himself and starting fresh in 2021. Since hitting the scene with his unique sound J-Minu$ has released two singles that have garnered him attention of blogs such as Buzz Music, Tha Produce Section, Roadie Music. J-Minu$ has managed to build himself an online community with various underground music outlets and streamers supporting his music such as iListenLive & The Creative Hills. J-Minu$ is not anticipated to slow down in 2021 with a project on the way with eOne’s Audio Network (music library) and a debut album release this summer there is much more anticipated from this South Texas artist.

NEW SINGLE “OPTIMISTIC” OUT ON JUNE 9TH: PRE SAVE HERE! https://jm.cubemusic.ca/optimistic

“Optimistic” is the 3rd single from J-Minu$ releasing June 9th anticipated to be followed up with a debut EP releasing later this summer. This track tells a story of the internal struggle J-Minu$ has faced in his music career. Although J has been finding success with his new sound, he uses this song to speak how he’s been feeling stuck in the same spot despite these recent accomplishments. In this song, J delivers a catchy memorable chorus spreading an optimistic approach to his craft to tie together this story of his struggle while bridging together verses that outline the mental and emotional barriers he has been facing. This song speaks to the mental health struggles that musicians face every day while taking an optimistic approach to the mentality and vision they need to keep persevering through these obstacles. J hopes this song speaks to listeners to keep positive throughout their journey; although they may not be seeing changes right away from their successes it is important to keep moving forward and manifesting their goals.

Jamie Reid/”Poür Me” was brought up in Ackergill in the far North Highlands of Scotland. From learning the guitar through High School and taking up bass and backing vocal positions in School Bands Jamie learned that there is no better feeling than performing live. Now Much older, slightly wiser and based in Aberdeen Scotland Jamie has been working on his ever changing solo project for years with no sign of slowing down. With Experience in various positions across a large scale of local and touring bands Jamie’s songwriting and influences vary greatly from track to track leading to an unpredictable live set.
It’s not been the easiest road and Jamie writes very personally about his struggles hence the name “Poür Me”  Hoping that certain themes will relate to his audience as his soul-bearing, raw music catches them.

New Single Taciturn Out now only on Bandcamp (Pay what you want download)

https://pourme.bandcamp.com/

About Taciturn-
Taciturn means “reserved or uncommunicative in speech; saying little”.
Set in the late teen/early 20’s era about repeatedly saying things you regret while at parties.
On occasion I’d try and train myself to be more reserved on nights out in order to avoid saying anything regretful which is where the title comes from.
This also isn’t a vague admittance to committing anything shockingly horrible it’s about the kind of moments everyone else laughs off and forgets instantly but you hold onto it and judge yourself harshly for it. There’s no other person being referred to in this- It’s in the moment vs morning after.

Why? Something different innit.

After a prolific series of releases in 2020 to kick start “Poür Me” Taciturn is the first single to be part of an album to be released in 2021.

“Similar to social anxiety or social phobia, anthropophobia is the fear of people. Unlike social anxiety, however, which often relates to feeling uncomfortable in crowds or a group context, anthropophobia symptoms can occur when the patient is in the presence of a single person.”

And now that you know the definition of Anthrophobia, can we change it to “absolute badassery”? Man! This new EP, Altered States hits so hard on each track and every single note. Certainly played with conviction, these guys have delivered a great package that’s a bit aggro, a bit punk and a whole lot of shit-kicking rock. These PA vets know exactly how to grab you by the ear and then by the throat. Singer Frank Phobia goes for the final blow with each syllable and the band is so no nonsense that you can’t help but bang thru the EP 3 or 4 times in one sitting. Lead single “Ghosts” is 1:57 of pure fast driving bliss. Anthrophobia is nailing a sound that is sorely missed without sounding dated or desperate.

Dream Finisher is a self-aware record. Plain and simple. High on the current times and slick like a greaser’s coiffed hair. Ear LSD on a sonic bed of nails. Andee Blacksugar has fleshed out the end of his 2020 trilogy with his signature moves all rolled into one. Smartass lyrics adorn lead single “Twatted”,  “Nobody cares what’s inside your underwear or who went to your fucking party.” A record and sound that all the current soulless pop jackoffs could only dream of having their merry men cook up. Instead, this whole recipe was concocted mostly in a Brooklyn apartment by an eloquent dude with beautiful hair and guitar licks for days who DOES NOT CARE what you think. After one listen you’ll be ready to go for a victory lap. Tracks like “A Prayer Trapped” will get your head bopping, kinda Beach Boys meets Blur.  It bleeds NYC (“Thrill of a Lifetime”) and as much concrete as that may elude to it easily blasts you off to outer space in “Don’t Make It Easier”. Certainly a great achievement, better still is that Dream Finisher is part of a trilogy just as lush and lavish as it’s two counterparts. For those of us who love substance to their music, Black Sugar Transmission has all you need and more.

I’m tellin’ ya, you gotta give it to a patient, consistent and polite artist. Jerad Finck is THAT guy. And, to top it off he’s got some great sounds to go right along with it. Jerad and I have been back and forth for a few months to get him a feature on M-S-G and well, life happens and it’s already October, (BOO!). I am happy to finally give them/him a bump.

Blazar is hot on the heels of brand new single “Precious”. Great timing too, it’s upbeat, fun, danceable. All the things needed to close your eyes for a few moments on such a soulless year. No surprise it’s as good as it is, the work has been put in and quite a team was behind it.

“Precious” was released on September 18 and was produced by BLAZAR & Anthony (Ajax) Resta (Duran Duran, Elton John, Perry Farrell). It was mixed by Mark Needham (The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Shakira, Stevie Nicks) and mastered by Hans Dekline (U2, Lisa Loeb). It was written by BLAZAR, Anthony (Ajax) Resta, Jay Condiotti (Collective Soul, Raven-Symone, Tiffany). So, yea…HOLEY MOLEY.

Want to hear more? Check out the song “Better” which debuted in February before the utter chaos we have all come to know.

As always, I am happy to share and spread music that you may not know. From the underground to the outer space, it’s been featured here at some point. So, give Blazar a chance. Tell your friends and just spread the word. Together we have to keep art alive, especially now.

Canadian band, THE SMILE CASE has sent M-S-G a brand new single to debut from their forthcoming album, Bipolar Bear Wildlife Park on Blacktop Records. A great description straight from the horses mouth is below:

“We are releasing a new album called ‘Bipolar Bear Wildlife Park’ on
March 6th which is more than likely one of the most painful ‘love’ records ever written. The band is an acquired taste and for fans of Elvis
Depressedly, American Pleasure Club & Craig Finn. This song and the new
album is an anxiety fueled rollercoaster that sounds better with a pair of headphones and 5mg of Diazepam.”

So, how could you NOT want to check that out? Be brave, here ya go:

Listener beware, you’re in for some intoxicating sensory overload courtesy of, Black Sugar Transmission. BST head-hancho Mr. Andee Blacksugar is at it again with new record, Wandering Into the Bullseye and it is everything you want in a musical meal. It’s got a ballsy dose of a cappella (“Like Glass”), a touch or two of nightclub danger (“Rescue Sirens”) it’s even got some 1980’s style snuff (“Padlock’s On The Cage”) and oh so much more. Look, it’s 2020 and we are overloaded (and overburdened) with computer and celebrity, we’ve digitized our brains to coma. Those of us surviving this chaos so ache for a troubadour like Blacksugar. Intelligent, witty and sharp-tongued. Andee certainly uses all his beta brain waves and frantic little fingers to the nth degree, presenting his sonic offerings as true artistic statements rather than just songs. This guy really wants to make it all matter. And, not to mention, this album is one part of a trilogy. Certainly prolific and poignant, this release sees Blacksugar isolating himself completely to perform it entirely on his own. This is music in a category all it’s own, from an unknown time and place. If you get it, then you GET IT. And if not, we don’t need ya. It’s always a pleasure to review a BST record, certainly one of MUSIC-SURVIVAL-GUIDE’s faves.

So, here’s your new soundtrack for a new year. Let’s dance, let’s break some shit. Let’s roll around in glitter and solicit sex from circus freaks while high on pixie sticks, and don’t forget…turn it up! Wandering Into the Bullseye will see the light in February.

Growth EP

VA based grunge darlings Sadartha return with new EP, Growth. Although not reinventing the wheel here, the band rather expands on their sound from awesome previous release Eden. With this new installment they certainly play to their strengths. Singer Johnny Noxious continues to sharpen his knifelike vocals while as a unit they remain as chilling, noisy, and loud as ever.

On Growth, Sadartha play in some pretty dark territory, but, center track “Eclipsing Binaries”, sonically lightens the load. Almost makes you wish the boys touched on that side more.

Ultimately, Sadartha does not disappoint. I would however, like to see them step out of their comfort zone on a future release. The band keeps getting better and I think with a bit more confidence they’ll be able to reach that new ground. And I would imagine they are not far off from such an achievement.

Key tracks: “Aconitum” & “Just Skin”
