Welp, planets…stars…the heaven’s, have all aligned, and 75% of Spilt Milk era Jellyfish have reunited to bring us THE LICKERISH QUARTET! (:holy bananas:) And over the last week or so they have been going hard on getting the word out, and it is a beautiful thing. By the sounds of it Roger, Eric and Tim have A LOT in store for us. And it is great timing as many of us are social distancing and the world is dealing with COVID-19. Music is always medicine.

Anyways, did you hear the first single, “LIGHTHOUSE SPACESHIP”? They have released two videos, one being standard and the other being a new lyric video. Check it out below and prepare to drool over the delicious sounds and production that only was expected.

And, please stay safe out there. Peace and Love.

Canadian band, THE SMILE CASE has sent M-S-G a brand new single to debut from their forthcoming album, Bipolar Bear Wildlife Park on Blacktop Records. A great description straight from the horses mouth is below:

“We are releasing a new album called ‘Bipolar Bear Wildlife Park’ on
March 6th which is more than likely one of the most painful ‘love’ records ever written. The band is an acquired taste and for fans of Elvis
Depressedly, American Pleasure Club & Craig Finn. This song and the new
album is an anxiety fueled rollercoaster that sounds better with a pair of headphones and 5mg of Diazepam.”

So, how could you NOT want to check that out? Be brave, here ya go:

BST-WITB

Listener beware, you’re in for some intoxicating sensory overload courtesy of, Black Sugar Transmission. BST head-hancho Mr. Andee Blacksugar is at it again with new record, Wandering Into the Bullseye and it is everything you want in a musical meal. It’s got a ballsy dose of a cappella (“Like Glass”), a touch or two of nightclub danger (“Rescue Sirens”) it’s even got some 1980’s style snuff (“Padlock’s On The Cage”) and oh so much more. Look, it’s 2020 and we are overloaded (and overburdened) with computer and celebrity, we’ve digitized our brains to coma. Those of us surviving this chaos so ache for a troubadour like Blacksugar. Intelligent, witty and sharp-tongued. Andee certainly uses all his beta brain waves and frantic little fingers to the nth degree, presenting his sonic offerings as true artistic statements rather than just songs. This guy really wants to make it all matter. And, not to mention, this album is one part of a trilogy. Certainly prolific and poignant, this release sees Blacksugar isolating himself completely to perform it entirely on his own. This is music in a category all it’s own, from an unknown time and place. If you get it, then you GET IT. And if not, we don’t need ya. It’s always a pleasure to review a BST record, certainly one of MUSIC-SURVIVAL-GUIDE’s faves.

So, here’s your new soundtrack for a new year. Let’s dance, let’s break some shit. Let’s roll around in glitter and solicit sex from circus freaks while high on pixie sticks, and don’t forget…turn it up! Wandering Into the Bullseye will see the light in February.

Growth EP

VA based grunge darlings Sadartha return with new EP, Growth. Although not reinventing the wheel here, the band rather expands on their sound from awesome previous release Eden. With this new installment they certainly play to their strengths. Singer Johnny Noxious continues to sharpen his knifelike vocals while as a unit they remain as chilling, noisy, and loud as ever.

On Growth, Sadartha play in some pretty dark territory, but, center track “Eclipsing Binaries”, sonically lightens the load. Almost makes you wish the boys touched on that side more.

Ultimately, Sadartha does not disappoint. I would however, like to see them step out of their comfort zone on a future release. The band keeps getting better and I think with a bit more confidence they’ll be able to reach that new ground. And I would imagine they are not far off from such an achievement.

Key tracks: “Aconitum” & “Just Skin”

SADARTHA: CD BABY

RJMJHey folks. I just wanted to share the latest news direct from Roger about his new project with Eric Dover and Tim Smith (probably the closest to a Jellyfish reunion that will occur) – I spoke to RJMJ last week and he gave me a very quick update on the band, Lickerish Quartet…

“New LQ music in the form of a 4-song EP coming out front of April surrounded by a fan funding-Pledge style campaign.” *Although that may not seem like much it actually answers two popular questions. So, keep your eyes open.

In the meantime, did anyone see the “Inside the Album” episodes Roger did with Produce like a Pro? They got into BOTH Jellyfish albums and they are an absolute pleasure to watch:

Katie Toupic - Magnetic Moves

Jeepers! I AM SO HAPPY that this record was put on my radar! (Directly by the artist herself, mind you). If I were to put into words, quite literally, a vibe that I get from this wonderful piece of work…it would be (now picture this)…playing 16-bit video games in a 1950’s style ice cream shop at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Pretty F’ing rad, no? Now imagine that vibe translated to an album of songs and you get Magnetic Moves, the debut full length LP from Katie Toupin (former Houndmouth).

Title track and lead single is a fuzzy little dancey number that could have been plucked from the late 80’s or early 90’s in all it’s disc drive glory (accompanied by an equally nostalgic video). “Here’s my heart, my dignity too. Take it slowly like, most men do.” And you better listen boys AND girls (to this, and the rest of the record).

Although the album gives you a fun starting line as a launch pad there is a lot to offer here that digs a bit deeper. “Moves” is romantic, honest and at times even gospel and so well crafted in both lyric and arrangement. It’s the slow dance that is “Someone To You” and the yearning beauty of “The Hills Are Calling” that can get you really wrapped up in this record. And then there are songs on here like, “In Your Dreams”, a fun bopper you can put on while you clean the house. Katie’s got ya covered here.

Magnetic Moves is a record that is commercially and structurally sound without losing any of it’s indie street cred. And that is a huge nod to Toupin for penning such a wonderful record as that is certainly a fine line to tred. So, don’t sleep on this one gang!

Kicking Sunrise - "Underneath"

Right Coast Music recording artists Kicking Sunrise are scheduled to release a new single this Friday, August 23rd entitled “Underneath” thru multiple streaming and downloadable platforms. And the advance listening I have heard is one of a song catchy and very radio ready.

The band has been together since 2013 and garnered some attention after posting a cover of Justin Timberlake’s song “Suit and Tie” to YouTube. Followed by debut single, “Here’s to the Sunrise” in 2015 which was then picked up for CBS3 Philly as their theme song.

Kicking Sunrise has also shared the stage with such big acts as, O-Town, Aaron Carter, Ryan Cabrera and many more. The band currently has a handful of shows coming up which you can find at their website below along with more information.

KICKING SUNRISE

Thanks to Jessica Andrews at Right Coast Music for reaching out and putting this on my radar. Good luck with the single!

MUSIC-SURVIVAL-GUIDE Episode 19 (Soda w:Spookey Ruben)Finally! A new episode. And I am ecstatic to say I had the honor to interview Spookey Ruben on his rare visit/tour to the East Coast. I linked up with him for his last 3 dates in NYC, NJ, and Long Island. I was also honored to participate in his experimental art pop VHS performance (NYC,NJ) and then to end our time together at a private house show (LI) performing two songs with him. We talked about a few of his different projects, his current show, what’s to come and a little bit of the in betweens here and there. On this trip he was also accompanied by his wife who showcased her artwork with her current show United Three Colors which was an incredible accompaniment to his show. So psyched to bring you this special episode. What a blast! Thanks so much Spookey! (Featured song, “Mr. Everywhere” off of the latest Spookey Ruben album, MODES III)

We are less than 2 weeks out from this VERY special show (Sun. May 19th at Village Pub Long Island) We cannot wait to give it all to Giovanni Silver Fox this night. This show is so important to me for a number of reasons. NOX CULT has reunited to play for all of you one more time. I really hope to see so many of you and when I do I will never forget it.
